Pittsburgh Comicon welcomes the stars of STAR WARS!
DAVID PROWSE
Tall and
broad-shouldered, Prowse played the menacing villain Darth Vader in the 1977 film Star
Wars. The film was a hit and Vader became Prowse's signature role, one he played in two
sequels: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). He also donned the
Vader-wear for The Star Wars Holiday Special. Prowse was once a competitive weightlifter,
and his physique was his entree into the movies: He appeared in the films Hammerhead
(1968), The Horror of Frankenstein (1970) and as the wheelchair-carrying bodyguard in
Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). Originally Prowse didn’t get the publicity
many thought he deserved for his role as Darth Vader, due to Vader’s voice being dubbed
over by James Earl Jones, but today, David is widely recognized as the Dark Lord of the
Sith. He even reprised his role wearing the suit of Vader for the games Star Wars: The
Interactive Video Board Game and Star Wars Monopoly. David favorite role, however, was as
the Green Cross Code Man, a character used in public service announcements in the United
Kingdom to teach children road safety. You can check out David’s official website at:
www.darthvader-starwars.com/ Appearance Tentative: David is committed to be
in Pittsburgh for the 2008 Pittsburgh Comicon, but it will depend on his recovery from a
scheduled hip surgery in February.
